The Suzuki knew what it wanted to be — a front-driven micro-car on a tight budget — but the Cruze was a bit more confused — and confusing. The Cruze was a sister car to the Suzuki Ignis but contractual obligations meant Holden was restricted in what variants it could sell here against the Suzuki. Maybe it was tempting fate, then, by turning to Japan for the Cruze. Back then, Holden was having great success with Europe-sourced small and light cars, discovering Australian buyers had a healthy appetite for cars such as the Astra and Barina. The Holden Cruze of 2002 — a totally different beast to the 2009 Holden Cruze, by the way — falls into the latter category. Other times, a car arrives that blurs the same marketing lines but causes you to realise why those lines were there in the first place.

A $19,990 plus on-roads price tag at launch hardly undercut the light-car establishment, either. While Holden hoped the Cruze would take on the Honda CR-V, Nissan X-Trail and Toyota RAV4 at their own game, buyers quickly worked out the Cruze was more of a direct competitor for the lamentable Daihatsu Terios. None of that changed the fact that as a relatively tall, AWD hatch with a tiny footprint, the Cruze was neither fish nor fowl. The basis of that affordable AWD light car wound up being the underlying structure of the Cruze.

2009 Holden Cruze Manual Was The

The automatic struggled on hills or when heavily loaded. Even though it was a lightweight car, the manual was the only one that gave truly adequate performance. The latter sapped a good chunk of the engine's 74kW, plus an equally alarming $2000 from your wallet.

The Cruze feels soft in corners, with plenty of body roll and less grip than you might imagine from an AWD platform. But nothing could make such a tall, narrow vehicle anything but top heavy. The high centre of gravity was offset a little by an extra 20 millimetres of track, front and rear, over the Ignis. At least the system was completely automatic, so the driver didn't need to push buttons or throw switches. But what the car didn't have was a set of low-ratio gears, so it was strictly a dirt-road AWD.

At least you got standard dual front airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners from day one. Not everyone bothered, although ABS did become standard for cars built after April 2004. And, unforgivably for a car aimed at younger drivers, anti-lock brakes were a $700 option. Cost cutting was evident in the braking department, with old-fashioned drum brakes at the rear. Even so, the rear end will skip around a bit and the car can feel fidgety at higher speeds.

The transmission also blotted its copybook with a recall for a left-hand driveshaft securing clip that was not strong enough. Either way, when the gearbox goes, a complete replacement unit is needed. The problem is likely to crop up more commonly on high-mileage cars or those that have been driven hard (so try to find out something about the previous owner). We've heard of enough cases of the gearbox chewing itself up internally to recommend an independent check before purchase. The first question mark is the car's manual gearbox. However, there are a few potential trouble spots that need close examination before handing over any money.

Make sure any inspection also includes the steering components because the odd steering rack has failed well before it should have, requiring replacement. Again, it's probably related to the way the car has been used but it's always worth a close check. Clutches also seem capable of giving grief and we've heard of cars that have had two or even three clutches within a short space of time.

They weren't cut out for it and the fact they were AWD will not save one from damage if a previous owner has been too optimistic about the vehicle's capabilities. It should also go without saying you wouldn't want to buy a Cruze that has ventured off-road. It affected all cars built between 20 but the recall was not made until several years after the first of those cars were sold.

At least as well made but simpler, with no all-wheel-drive keeping costs down. THE COMPETITORS SUZUKI IGNIS The Cruze's half-brother. Make sure it's been checked and fixed if necessary. ■ Same goes for the dodgy batch of driveshaft clips. ■ Make sure the recall for a potentially incorrect airbag has been attended to. All these components can give trouble.
